I often switch between tabs and find it extremely irritating that every time
I come back to the tab I switched from the vertical scroll bar is slid back
to the very top. So I have to slide it down, then I go to another tab, come
back and.... again I see the very beginning of the document, aaaagrh! It happens
despite the cursor being somewhere down there. So the cursor's behaviour is
correct but the scroll bar misbehaves.

Try to work with several documents at a time for longer so you will understand
the severity of this annoyance. This is a design bug.

While on a subject of design, another thing that has kept annoying me, I've
just recalled it by trying to perform a task. It's about closing a tab/active
document. Since I remember in ALL (or very most) Windows applications the shortcut
I used for it was CTRL+F4. The examples of applications that have this shortcut
include Firefox, Excel, Foxit Reader, IE, Paint Shop Pro and countless others......
And then out of the blue comes Notepad++ with its CTRL+W???

And to finish off nicely :-) one more thing. Whenever I open a document the
encoding is set to ANSII although in options I set it to Unicode.

The version of Notepad++ I use is 4.9.2.

basmond -

i'd recommend upgrading for starters, it takes just a few minutes, and

/settings/preference/ has a "New Document" tab that allows encoding options
(UTF-8 without BOM, apply while open ANSI file), plus the

/settings/shortcut mapper.../ allows you to change shortcut assignments if you
don't like the way they work now,

not sure about scroll-bar slippage - is the Compare plug-in activated? Scrolling
synchronizes with it on. Maybe View Synchronize scrolling was activated?

cheers!

› Well, did you try CTRL+W in the mentioned apps above? I guess you didn't!
Please, name just one app that closes its tabs with CTRL+F4 but not with CTRL+W!

EXCUUSE ME!!! ¦›) Oh come on... CTRL+W, CTR+TAB, CTRL+SHIFT+TAB; CTRL+WHEEL
- these are very common hotkeys when comes to manipulate tabs in app. Check
this: http://www.hassanzadeh.netfirms.com/Teaching.htm

I'm not sure if I am missing something here. In my version of Npp (ver. 5.2
- last full release), Ctl/W is defined as 'Close' meaning Close current file,
which, if you have more than one tab, will close a tab.

As for the encoding of opened documents -- the setting only applies to documents
created within NP++, not to existing documents opened in NP++.
afaik, there isn't a setting to automatically convert the encoding of opened
files. You may be able to do this using macros.

Oh yeah? :-) There you go. Paint Shop Pro does not use Ctrl-W. So it's 1-1.
But based on the fact that Alt+F4 is used to close the whole window, it's more
logical that Ctrl+F4 closes the window/tab inside, and then *I* win :-P And
I never used Ctrl-W cos I never had to:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449

"CTRL+F4: Closes the current Multiple Document Interface (MDI) window" and no
mention about Ctrl-W.

Anyway, if (almost) all applications use BOTH Ctrl-W and Ctrl-F4 then why not
Notepad++?

Thanx for your reply.

The encoding options were set in the preferences. Now I can't replicate this
behaviour but I also updated to v.5.3.1. Well, the time will show...

Shortcut mapper - great!

Scroll-bar - I don't know if Compare plug-in was activated but if it's not activated
by default then it wasn't and it's not now. View Synchronize scrolling was not
activated.

Despite updating to the new version the scroll still keeps jumping (before I
wrote "to the very top" but it probably depends on the length of the document).
To see what I'm talking about simply open one document (can be empty) and a
very long document in another tab (within the same view). Then scroll down to
the very bottom and place the cursor there. Go to another document and come
back. You will have to scroll down again to see the cursor.
