Sorry but this must not be released as a final.

Two showstoppers:

---------------------------
Bug: Can't associate extensions.

In 5.1b UNICODE I can't associate new extensions in Preferences -> File Association
dialog.
After adding extention (.txt for example), it is added to the list but after
N++ restart it is gone.

I've monitored what happens with Process Monitor and it looks like N++ tries
to change registry value to Notepad[square] (square being probably badly encoded
++ sign) but fails to do that so old value is still there.

Works fine in ANSI version.
---------------------------

---------------------------
Bug: FtpSynchronize plugin does not upload file on save

1. Connect to ftp
2. Double click file in ftp listing to open
3. Edit
4. Save

What happens: File is not uploaded back to server.

Reproduced both in ANSI and UNICODE versions.
---------------------------

FtpSynchronize bug is because of these lines:

if (BufferID != NULL) {
SendMessage(nppData._nppHandle,NPPM_GETFULLPATHFROMBUFFERID,(WPARAM)BufferID,(
LPARAM)openFile);

NPPM_GETFULLPATHFROMBUFFERID returns just filename instead of full path.

Here is diff to previous version:
http://npp-plugins.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/npp-plugins/NppPlugins/FTP_synchro
nize/src/FTP_synchronize.cpp?r1=1.44&r2=1.45

Before it just did this to get path:
SendMessage(nppData._nppHandle,NPPM_GETFULLCURRENTPATH,0,(LPARAM)openFile);

Please could you make notepad++ Really portable?

Now it writes (npp.5.0.3.bin.zip version) to PC host's registry without user
consent (maybe you can do it as option):

----------------------------------
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\shell
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\shell\open
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\shell\open\command

----------------------------------

----------------------------------
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\shell\open\command\:
""F:\Programming\npp.5.0\notepad++.exe" "%1""
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\: "Notepad++ Document"
----------------------------------

many thanks :)

I would dearly love to use the Unicode version but so many extensions don't
seem to be converted yet - especially Explorer and Favourites I can't do without
on a day-to-day basis.
Spell-Checker?
Simple Script?
Color Picker?
Compare?
CharM?

I've posted this problem before but without any results so here again.

shortcuts.xml:
<Macro name="Trim Trailing and save" Ctrl="no" Alt="yes" Shift="yes" Key="83">
<Action type="1" message="2170" wParam="0" lParam="0" sParam=" " />
<Action type="1" message="2170" wParam="0" lParam="0" sParam=" " />
<Action type="1" message="2170" wParam="0" lParam="0" sParam=" " />
<Action type="0" message="2327" wParam="0" lParam="0" sParam="" />
<Action type="0" message="2327" wParam="0" lParam="0" sParam="" />
<Action type="2" message="0" wParam="42024" lParam="0" sParam="" />
<Action type="2" message="0" wParam="41006" lParam="0" sParam="" />
</Macro>

Hey, what's the point of sending THREE times a SCI_REPLACESEL (2170) command
and TWO times SCI_TAB (2327) command?
42024 and 41006 alone are enough. Please remove all the others, I guess there
is no good reason to keep them. Only thing they do is they break that macro
badly.

3 - I Press "Find"
4 - For example a word "" - rus
5 - I Press " Find in all files " - finds nothing.
(But if to press simply FIND, finds).
6 - Similar occurs and with " Replace in all files "

I already described and not time! "Search and replacement in all files" on cyrillics
does not work.
I am repet: IN ALL FILES on cyrillics - not work.
The top post, is the citation from the previous theme of release 5.1. What that
the person by name... Has laid out the version with corrections, take on a note.
There bad things are corrected many.

How will you expect someone else fixes the bugs for you if you don't even take

It's due to file association feature. I have no idea to do this feature in another

I don't think it's wise to take away this working feature, and I think "portable"
users are smart enough to not use this feature which obviously will modify the
registry of Windows.

You have understood a mistake about SEARCH? Also have considered
mistakes of the version 503_2?
---------------------
The program is started but in French - but I am not assured, it can be and other
language.
The conclusion - does not work nativeLang.xml
As I replace with version ANSI that the program becomes back in Russian.

Hi again, "Clear ReadOnly flag" clears it flag only in NPP, not on file, after
changes - you can't save file, you should remove it flag manully, in prev versions
that was woks from npp.

Thank you.

It's due to file association feature. I have no idea to do this feature in
another way under Windows system.
The registry is the only way to make file associations in Windows systems.

If you are using N++ portable and want file associations, then you still can.
Just understand that doing this will result in failures when your portable device
is not present.

What I did was to write a simple VBS script that checks if N++ portable is available.
If it is present N++ launches, otherwise it does nothing. Then you will at least
avoid any error messages.

Tested Unicode 5.1 RC

Forgive me for being blunt and correct me if I am wrong, Don, but obviously
NO THOUGHT has been given whatsoever after I made several bug reports and posted
them as a reply to various previous version announcements. You always complain
how stupid users don't give enough info/testing/description, but I can just
copy/paste it here, because none of this has been fixed in this last version.
You're having text missing in your editor in last x versions, BTW.

Critical:
text disappears after "save as",
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5101760

The non-critical bugs are these:
Caret blinking rate bug, http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5058655
Caret fully or partially disappearing + save dialog comes up wrongly positioned,
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5066349
mouse text selection bug, http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5066373
+ followup
auto-indent anomalous behavior,
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5074005 + followup
3rd mouse button panning feature missing,
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5046090
display filename only in window title,

Text disappear: can be fixed/prevented, and I will try to, but this does seem
to be a little bug in scintilla.

Caret blinking rate bug: fixed in next release
Caret fully or partially disappearing: I doubt notepad++ can prevent that, the
caret position is scintilla's job
save dialog comes up wrongly positioned: Might be worth looking into
mouse text selection bug: cant reproduce it myself, but its probably scintilla
since scintilla does that
auto-indent anomalous behavior: often complained aobut, it jsut how it works.
The autoindent plugin I wrote uses a different method, try that one.
3rd mouse button panning feature missing: hard to implement, and more like
scintilla's job (I think its even in their TODO but im not sure)
display filename only in window title: very valid FR, I'll ask Don, should be
rather easy to implement, its just that the preference GUI is getting a bit
cramped nowadays, imo :P

never mind, I said that ;-)
Sometimes that drives me mad too, I'd just kill someone over a bug report they
post in some VERY broken english when they don't even specify what version are
they using while you can barely understand what they write about.

Thanks, Harry, for great work. Hopefully you'll have time to report those Scintilla
bugs too.

I tested both unicode and ansi v5.1 RC. A bug with the incremental search feature,
which originated in v4.9.x, is still present. It was previously reported there:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5167540
http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5130221

When I use the "enter" key (return key) to search forward, and then put the
cursor somewhere in the window with the mouse, it selects everything between
the first result and the new cursor position. Same thing if I hit the ESC key
to end the search, the cursor goes back to the first result, instead of staying
at the last matching result it found.
However the incremental search behaves perfectly well when clicking on the search
box's arrows instead of hitting the return key.

Thanks a lot for an otherwise great editor

There is a bug when using a macro that copies text.

Steps to reproduce :
1- On line, let say 25, begin recording a macro
2- Pick a word (highlight + ^C)
3- Go to the begining (Alt+Home) of the line and do [Enter] and go to the new
line (Up)
4- Copy (^V)
5- Stop recording the macro.

Now watch out :
5- Go to line, let say 30 and play back

=> the curor will always go to line of the recording (25) and play back there
instead of playing line 30.

If you pick the line After you started recording, the macro will always pick
that line as its first action, unless you moved to it with your arrow keys or
similar (ie, not with the mouse).

Hello Don,

I've found this error: One of the windows in NPP (5.0.3 and still in 5.1) showing
the edited file is not updating at all.

Sorry for the long explanation following, but I think this is the only way to
show what is happening.

Before we start: 1. I read a message describing this problem one or two months
ago and I could not reproduce it at that time.

2. I develop WinSize2 for a longer time now (but on another computer AMD 2.6MHz,
this one is an Intel Pentium M running actually with 600 MHz) and I never !!!
saw this effect before.

The scenery: WinSize2 is writing 2 files: FileB about 4 sec after FileA. Both
files are displayed, the one in the primary the other in NPP's secondary window.
(You can change the windows or put both in the primary window: the effect is
always the same.)

Settings: "Automatic recognition of file changes" (or how it is named in the
English version):
(Checked) "Activate"
(Checked) "Quiet activation"
(not checked) "After actualisation scroll to end"

Both files are INI files but are declared now as plain text (INI or plain text:
the effect is the same.) Both files contain a Date/Time entry, so you can see,
whenever a display is updated:

[Settings]
LangID=0407
Date=2008-10-18 16.15.29
[Lang_Msg]
M1000=German: The Original
...

FileA is always updated at once with the correct time, FileB is normally NOT
updated showing the date and time it had before.

AND is updated when you change the focus to another program and back to NPP
(this is what the other user reported in the other thread before).

=========================================

In other words: You start with a correct display, NPP has the focus:

FileA showing 16.15.29 and
FileB showing 16.15.32.

You rewrite both files, focus changes my program and back to NPP.

FileA showing 16.20.24 and
FileB showing 16.15.32 as before.

You see when a part-window (the primary or secondary) is repainted (means: canvas
repainted = the view is updated): the secondary win with FileB was repainted,
the primary with FileA was not; it is repainted when you change focus to another
program like the editor and back.

=========================================

Next try 2: this editor has the focus, my program WinSize2 rewrites both files:

focus changes to WinSize2 and back to the editor. Both files are NOT repainted.
This happens for both files, and when NPP gets the focus next time they are
updated.

=========================================
Try 3:
now: (not checked) "Quiet activation"

Same as Try 2: editor has focus, WinSize2 rewrites files, editor gets focus
automatically again.
NPP: no reaction (as it should be - as designed).

When you change focus to NPP then you are asked in this order:

"FileB is modified, reload?" and
"FileA is modified, reload?"

I say YES and files are reloaded and repainted.

COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM with the quiet activation too ????? (that NPP waits
to get the focus again?)

Hope this helps in discovering the problem.

Hello Don,

I confirmed the above problem on another computer. The problem arises there
too.

If you like, I think you COULD reproduce this. This is what I did:

-- Download WinSize2 V2.14 from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/winsize2/

(WinSize2: Move and resize windows to learned parameters.)

-- unpack into directory e.g. %programfiles%\WinSize2

-- Start WinSize2.exe (it tells you where it put its INI file to)

-- edit INI file in NPP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Applicationdata\MagraSoft\WinSize2.INI

-- edit in MSG file for English version in NPP (may be secondary win) (from
dir where you started the EXE):
WinSize2_Lang_EN.Msg

-- set focus to any window and include its parameters to WinSize2 by: 1 time
"Ctrl+Alt+Z" (will be echoed by tooltip)

-- edit "Special Parameters" by 3 times "Ctrl+Alt+Z"
and toggle "Always on Top"

-- click "Change"

-- click "OK"

--> both files are changed.

And PS not to forget: Thanks for your great program. It helps me every day.

Two bugs I've run into in this release candidate:

1. The 3 edit/copy current... menu commands are truncating the last character
from the copied item, e.g. c:\foo\bar\foobar.java becomes c:\foo\bar\foobar.jav.

2. When opening Notepad++ from the command line it appears to set it's current
working directory to the notepad++ install location and so the command notepad++
foobar.txt isn't looking in the current working directory to find the file but
instead it's trying to find it in the Notepad++ install location. I read some
forum item that said this had been fixed in version 4.9 but I'm witnessing this
behavior in this release candidate.

Same here.
Also annoying when using Total Commander.

When I do SHIFT+F4 and put some name to create new file, the file is created
in current directory and notepad++ automatically invokes but it can't find the
file.

Shows message instead:
---------------------------
Create new file
C:\...\test.txt doesn't exist. Create it?
---------------------------

I'd just kill someone over a bug report they post in some VERY broken
english when they don't even specify what version are they using
while you can barely understand what they write about.
Indeed, it'll be clear for us if the version is mentioned in the bug reports.

At least they do their best to express in another language than their mother
tongue so I think there's nothing we can blame to.

You have to retrieve it from the SVN for now.
Advantage is that with one click of a button, you can the latest and greatest
stuff :)

Why the copy file path/file name/full file path function (from the menu by right
clicking on the file tab) do not copy the last char of the path??

Just curious, but when you update to a RC/BETA, as soon as the full version
is released, will the Notepad++ updater update to it, or do you have to go download
it?

Usually, the updater will be set to download the new one after a few days or
weeks, to ensure the release is stable enough (so patience is key here, if you
want it real bad you can download it from the usual locations).
