Uninstall Notepad++. Remove all references to "Notepad++" from regedit. Reinstall
Notepad++.

Bingo!

I find this hard to believe. A nery nice application somehow screws up (3rd
time in 6 months for me) and the only solution is to uninstall the application
and re-install it?

(I guess that's one way to make sure I have the most up-to-date version of the
app.)

None of the above helped.
I found a config.xml file in the Application Data folder under local profile.
Removed it..
Now my Notepad++ starts fine and there's no errors after closing either.

Good luck

It seems that you use always v3.8.

Update your Notepad++ to v4.1.1 if you don't want such crash issue happens again
in the future.

I'm using v4.1.1 and experience similar problems: sometimes NPP does not startup
(no error message, nothing). I always have to delete the session.xml from the
AppData-Dir, then every works fine again.

When I had this problem the config.xml in my Application Data had a zero length.
I copied the config.xml from the Notepad++ folder into the Appication Folder
and everything worked. This problem occured for me after running the latest
version for several weeks. This is an interesting problem since I rarely mess
with the Notepad configuration.

Yup, the same for me (0 length), I use N++ from a USB exclusively so I never
install, so all I did was get into the installlation .zip file copy conig.xml
into Notepad++ folder and restart Notepad. Maybe if you want to avoid all the
installation problems - don't. Just use .zip to copy files to a Notepad++ program
folder.

By the way - where is the website's .zip link for the latest version?

I get the same issue using Notepad++ version 4.2.2 on Win XP pro.

Works fine for a number of weeks, then for no apparent reason I suddenly get
this "load config.xml failed!" message.

I experienced this problem for the first time today. My
%APPDATA%\Notepad++\config.xml file also had nothing in it and size zero. I
copied over the one from the applications directory and all is well. I am using
version 4.3.

The only thing I can add is that in the past two days I have installed True
Launch Bar, StyleXP, and changed my XP Desktop Theme via StyleXP. I have no
idea if this is related or not.

The only other thing I can think of is that I had XP BSOD on me about an hour
ago and Notepad++ may have been running at that time. It may be that the file
was corrupted some how due to the BSOD crash.

The zero length of config.xml issue is like phantom stuck on me since v3.X.
The problem is I can not at all reproduce it.

So if it happens to you, please describe the symptoms here, I'll try to get
rid of it!

The same solution worked for me with v4.5. I removed "C:\Documents and
Settings\..\Programdata\Notepad++\config.xml" and everything worked fine.

My guess is that the error is due to a failed update of the file when notepad++
exited some time earlier. Maybe on windows shutdown or hibernation.

If this is the case, then the quick fix would be (for the development team)
to add somewhere in startup code:

if(length of config.xml is zero)
inform user("config.xml is corrupted. Deleting it")
delete config.xml
restart notepad++

Thanks by the way for a brilliant product!

Ben Arami

Windows XP SP2 all patches current. HP nc6400 laptop, 2G RAM. Upgraded from
N++ 4.4 to 4.5 now I get the error every time on startup. config.xml is not
0 bytes - it is about 4k.

I found that the copy of config.xml in the /Program Files directory was 5k,
but the one in the Applications folder was 0k. I copied the good one over the
0k, and now it works.

Hi there!

I am using 4.6 and it happens to me to. A while back I experienced this error
also maybe in a earlyer version. I reïnstalled windows yesterday and the new
Notepad++ seems to have this error.

I am using the folowing setup:

Op: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Dual Quadcore Xeon
Mem: 4 Gigabyte

The interface seems "retro" (Windows 3.11 style)

Other then this bug/error, I want to note that I really love this software!
Maybe you should commercialize it using (non intrusive) targetted ads using
for example Google as partner and offer a banner free version for a small fee
per computer :)

Best Regards,
Jan Jaap

I can confirm that every time I've left Notepad++ open on my work machine and
the automated system updates (NOT the normal Microsoft Updates) does a system
reboot, I get the "load config.xml failed" msg.

I can also confirm that when this error appears the "\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Application Data\Notepad++\config.xml" is of size zero and that
closing NP++, deleting the config.xml file, and opening NP++ again regenerates
the config.xml file INCLUDING my opened file history list.

I'd say Ben's code suggestion would probably do the trick - and if somebody
wants to do a build with it, I'm game to test it out since I have a repeatable
failure scenario available to me.

Jon-Mikel

I installed this excellent program to a USB drive and for the first few sessions
it worked very well. Then I started getting "load config.xml failed" and "load
styler.xml failed" messages, followed by memory error messages when I closed
the program. After reading through this forum, I looked through all the NPP
folders and realized that for some reason, the only copies of config.xml and
stylers.xml I could find were in the /Notepad++Portable/App/DefaultData/settings/
folder. I copied the two files to the /Notepad++Portable/Notepad++/ folder and
bingo, no more error messages and my Local Folders window was back.

Love the program, I've been looking for an app like this for a long time. There
are a few features I would love to see added (like the ability to highlight
portions of code and comment them out <!-- --> with one click) but for the price,
it rocks as is. Keep up the good work.

I'm using version 4.2.2 with Win2K Pro.

The program had been working fine since I wrote my last comment but when I went
to use it today, same problem, same error messages. Config.xml and Styler.xml
were both again missing from the /Notepad++Portable/Notepad++/ folder. I copied
them same as last time and the problem went away.

Just in case it matters, I will tell you that the last file I opened with NP++
was since opened in another HTML editor (Homesite), modified, and saved under
a different name.

Keep up the great work, thanks for your attention to this.

So the problem probably won't occur if you don't autoload the last session on
re-opening N++.
